Vegans In Coventry Celebrate Opening of City’s First 100% Vegan Store

4 min read

Coventry vegans aged two to seventy-two have been celebrating the opening of the city’s first 100% vegan shop.  And with plant-based diets officially one of Britain’s fastest-growing lifestyle choices, it’s looking like Green Unicorn in FarGo Village could soon be top banana.

Green UnicornBut food is only part of the story. Along with a wide range of fully-vegan groceries, the shop, which opened for business last month, also has an eye to the wider cruelty-free lifestyle. Already stocking products such as vegan dog treats and T-shirts printed with vegan inks, it has plans to add soaps, cosmetics and jewellery in the new year.

Owner Nikki, who has herself been vegan for three years and was vegetarian for twenty-five years before that, was inspired to create the shop after spotting a gap in the market. “I got increasingly frustrated” she explained “knowing there were vegan products out there, but being unable to source them in Coventry”. FarGo Village, already on the vegan radar as home of animal-product-free brew house Twisted Barrel Ale, proved the perfect location for the new venture.

And anyone who thinks veganism is all about self-denial needs to think again. Amongst the expected staples such as pulses, pasta, grains and meat and cheese substitutes lurks a surprise best seller: vegan squirty cream!

Nikki said that an explosion of new products onto the market in the last few years has made conversion to veganism easier than ever before. And treats like vegan crisps and confectionery, all of which are available in the shop, have an important part to play because in the past, cravings for their non-vegan counterparts have made it harder for people to stick to a plant-based diet.

At the moment, Green Unicorn is preparing for the festive season with everything you need for the perfect cruelty-free Christmas dinner and opportunities to create your very own bespoke Christmas hamper filled with vegan products of your choice.

Everything on sale at the shop is sourced from ethical wholesalers who take seriously their commitments to recycling and minimising their carbon footprint. Nikki said “We are 100% dedicated vegan, which means you don’t have to real labels or second-guess. As a vegan myself, I can offer a personal experience and be responsive to customer demand. Plus, I stock items you will not find in the supermarket, from vegan chocolate bars to ice cream, and new lines are being added all the time”.
