Arts & Culture Featured Free City Centre Art as Part of RISING 16 By Rob Posted on November 10, 2016 5 min read 0 0 416 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr Visitors to Coventry city centre will be treated to a duo of free art and culture displays as part of RISING 16, the second annual gathering of the RISING Global Peace Forum. Alinah Azadeh and Teakster will both be creating art in the city, on Wednesday 16 November – with more artistic talent on display at Fargo Village as part of RISING FREE in the evening. Alinah is the UK Artist in Residence for this year’s event and specialises in art that gives the public an opportunity to get involved and contribute to her work – and in this case, take a piece of it away. As part of the newly created role for RISING 16 she is creating a special installation and performance titled ‘Where There is a Ruin’. The artist has spent time at Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre and the Cathedral, meeting people all over the city in order to capture Coventry as a city of sanctuary and renewal. People will be able to see and hear her work at Coventry Cathedral, where she is also hosting a live installation in the ruins from 10am on Wednesday, where more than 100 small artworks, created by Alinah, will be gifted to whoever finds them. A live performance of Where There is a Ruin will follow at 6:00-6:15pm, about which individuals can find out more about, and contribute to online at wherethereisaruin.wordpress.com. Alinah said: “At the moment the narrative surrounding refugees in our country bothers me and I wanted to create something to develop a new understanding, taking Coventry’s culture of welcome to those affected by and fleeing conflict as inspiration. “The aim is to enable people to step into the shoes, minds and hearts of those whose experience seems to be very different from their own. “I am trying to take the temperature of the city and I will be taking in everything that’s going on at RISING 16 and building it into my next piece of work.” Elsewhere, multi-award winning artist Teakster will be creating a live mural in University Square, with students from Coventry University from 1:00-4:00pm. The piece will explore the ripple effect of human actions on other people and the environment – in-line with RISING 16’s theme of ‘The Ripple Effect’. Both artists will also be present at RISING FREE, the closing event for this year’s annual gathering. Teakster will have his completed work on display and Alinah will perform an autobiographical spoken word piece, inspired by her time in the city. There will also be live theatre, music and street food at the free-to-enter festival held at Fargo Village, to celebrate the city of peace and reconciliation and honour peacebuilders around the world.
