In a match which Highgate’s physicality dominated they managed to stop Coventry playing their normal passing game and were clinical in taking their own chances to win 3-1. Despite the home team upping their game in the second period, they did not create enough to get back into the game. Highgate pressed Coventry into early mistakes, and after a header was saved well by goalkeeper Richard Morris, failure to clear the resulting corner led to a sloppy goal for the away team. David Edwards stooping to head easily from close range. It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled, a cross from wide left picking out the head of Lei Brown who dispatched the ball past Morris impressively. Coventry tried to switch to a long ball game, but rather than being any more effective, it seemed to play to the strength of Highgate who lapped up high balls at ease and made light work of the midfield battles. Without the strength of Jean Dakouri in the middle of the park United were unable to get a strong foothold into early proceedings. After half an hour Kevin Thornton used a bit of his magic to trick his way into the box, before being felled by a Highgate defender. A penalty was just reward, but keeper Brendan Bunn showed excellent agility by diving full stretch to somehow keep Cox’s well struck spot kick out of the corner of the net. As the second half got underway United seemed to make more purposeful passes and attack with more vigour, manager Anderson had no doubt made himself heard at the break. Thornton was once again brought down in the box, and this time picked up the ball himself to send Bunn the wrong way and halve the deficit. The home team, now invigorated, pushed to find a way back into the match. A couple of half chances from full back Pierre Moudime failed to hit the target, before the previously quiet strike force of Dylan Otshudi and Simeon Townsend linked up, only for the latter to spurn his chance from about 6 yards out. As the home team continued to attempt their fight back into the match, it was in fact Highgate who came up with the killer goal themselves. A corner put in quite high wasn’t dealt with by the Coventry defence and Isaac Jagroop rose highest to power the ball home with his head. Although the visitors only had 3 efforts on target they were clinical in finishing them, the fact that all 3 of them were headers tells its own story and points once again to Coventry not dealing with the aerial threat on goal well enough.
